Norman Laws...
5th August 2003
It is with deep sadness that Debt on our Doorstep reports the death of Norman Laws. Norman, a previous Chair of the Money Advice Association, was a strong advocate for independent money advice services for many years. His commitment to improving the position of people in debt, and to tackling the worst practices of the credit industry, was second to none but was always combined with a pragmatic approach and presented with a lively sense of humour.
Earlier this year, Norman was involved in lobbying Government to improve the protection available to debtors as part of the current review of enforcement measures and he presented a paper at the Debt on our Doorstep policy seminar, supporting the call for statutory interest rate ceilings.
He will be greatly missed by all who worked alongside him, whether at Newcastle City Council or more widely through the considerable contacts that he built up through his national, and often international, Money Advice work.
