Debt on our Doorstep

News

Journalists/ Broadcasters

Debt on our Doorstep aims to highlight instances of extortionate and predatory lending in the media and we are pleased to assist journalists with stories, including case studies for broadcast and print.

In the past we have worked with Newsnight, Watchdog, and many national papers and magazines, and have been able to contact local community based agencies and locate case-studies.

If you are researching a story, please give us as much notice of this as possible. On average it can take one month to find case studies for broadcast and two weeks for print.

If you want assistance with research for stories, or wish to sign up for press releases, please e-mail us with details of your areas of interest in the first instance.

Debt on our Doorstep 'Pay it Back' Campaign Taken Up In Parliament

Mark Lazarowicz M.P, the Chair of the Cross Party Group on Debt today announced that he is 'delighted to take the lead on the the issue of credit card default charges in Parliament' and is backing Debt on our Doorstep's campaign to get unfair credit card default charges refunded.

Last month the Office of Fair Trading announced that credit card lenders were making over £300 million per year in excessive charges. However, in correspondence with Debt on our Doorstep they state that they are incapable of forcing lenders to make refunds to borrowers.

Debt on our Doorstep has highlighted that the Office of Fair Trading may be able to force refunds by threatening to suspend the consumer credit licenses of lenders that have been making the unfair charges.

Damon Gibbons, Chair of Debt on our Doorstep commented:

'We don't believe that the OFT is taking all possible action to get back this money for consumers. But if they genuinely don't have the powers they need, then M.P's must intervene to put pressure on the industry to pay their debts to their customers. Mark's support for this campaign is a great step forward.'

A campaign pack has been produced which includes a standard letter for borrowers to send to their M.P's. Click here to download a copy.
